Through the generous support of the P.E.I. Council of the Arts, eklektikos, under the leadership of artistic director Dale Sorensen and composer-in-residence Jim O'Leary, are proud to announce the inaugural Atlantic Canadian Young Composers Workshop.
Four talented young composers from across Atlantic Canada will be selected by an application process to participate in an intense 4-day workshop in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island July 12-15, 2007. Selected participants will be required to write, prior to the workshop, a new 7-10 minute composition for the following instrumentation: flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet, trumpet, trombone and piano. Each participant will receive daily composition masterclasses from Jim O'Leary, and have their works rehearsed and workshopped by eklektikos. On the final day of the workshop, the completed new works by the young composers, along with compositions by Richard Covey and Jim O'Leary, will be presented in a public concert at Steel Recital Hall, UPEI. The dress rehearsal and recital will be recorded so the participants can have a professional quality CD recording for their portfolio.
While young musicians are given many opportunities to perform, young composers rarely have an outlet for their expression. This will be a unique opportunity for young composers to develop their talent by receiving intensive training with a professional composer, and to have their works performed by a professional ensemble. For eklektikos, this will be a chance to meet some up-and-coming young composers with whom future collaborations could evolve, and to fulfill our ongoing mandate to encourage the creation of new works for contemporary classical chamber ensemble, and increase the profile of composers from our area. It will also provide our group with new material to add to our repertoire for sharing with audiences on future concerts, and will infuse our repertoire with fresh ideas by a new generation of composers.
