It was noticed that I wasn't getting along with the kids, but it being the 60's, autism was not yet widely known about. Certainly, if you could talk, you didn't have it. Before 6th grade, I had already been introduced to the mental health system, but talking to psychologists didn't help. Apparently they were getting angry about the lack of progress toward "normality"; I was put into a residential treatment center with the notion I was "emotionally disturbed". After that, the kids didn't bother me, but neither did I have any as friends. Only after getting the internet and finding out about autism and Asperger's syndrome did I realize that, yeah, I am autistic. This was quite readily confirmed by several professionals, though I still keep having nagging doubts. |
