The P.E.I. Curling Association has announced a new event for the calendar - the Provincial Mixed Seniors, which will take place January 12-14 at the Cornwall Curling Club.
"We are very excited about this as we felt there was a need for an event such as this in the province," said association president Chick Morrison. "It is a new concept in that we believe we are the only province to offer a mixed seniors event, but with the numbers of eligible seniors now playing and enjoying the sport, we are sure it will be a popular addition."
Currently curling has a Men’s and a Women’s Seniors, with the provincial winners representing P.E.I at nationals. The Mixed Seniors however will be purely a provincial tournament, although Morrison hopes that if the format proves successful, it may encourage others, especially in the region, to offer a competition.
The format of the event will be double knock-out with games lasting eight ends. The skip and the third must be opposite gender, but what is unique about this event, is that it will be the only provincial competition in which players will be allowed to use a delivery stick. Delivery sticks are currently forbidden in events which lead to a national championship.
The deadline to register for the provincial Mixed Seniors is January 3, 2007. Application forms will be available from all rinks, and the cost per team will be $120. Players must be at least 50 years old on December 31, 2006.
