  • Our Latest Adventure! Archery! Give it a try!
    Always wanted to try archery.

We have a Long Bow. My Son is very good with it. I can't even shoot an arrow past 20 feet with it, let alone hit the target . He was popping the target bag at 25 yard today.

This is the New Parker Wildfire XP.
60 Lb Weight, 28 Inch draw.
    258 ft per second.

A very nice smooth bow to use. Not a bad price either.

It has a True Glow 4 pins sight. A whisker Biscuit Arrow rest. It's been sighted at 20 yards on the top pin.
We still have to sight in the other pins.

Ted found the 60 lbs a bit heavy. We should have went lighter. But he has the same drawl length as me. He was having a blast today.

It took me a dozen shots to get any form down. But it gets easier and more enjoyable with each shot.

Here is what happened when the string hit my arm on a shot. I was holding the bow all wrong. Looks worse than it really is.
But learn to hold the bow correctly.

There is the group at 20 Yards today. Not bad for only a second session. We moved this small target bag all the way out to 45 yards in a wind today and I was hitting within 10 inches every shot.

    Anyway, Archery is an Adventure.
We had a blast with the boys today.
    Give it a try.
  • Proper Towing Procedures for Kayaks & Canoe's; How to Compact a Tow line!
When a fellow boater (Canoe or Kayak) is in trouble in rough seas, injured, simply to tired or sick to paddle, you will need to offer a tow.

Sadly, few people are aware of the proper or safe towing procedures in these small recreational craft. The first thing most people do is tie a rope to the bow (front) of the boat needing assistance and then attach the rope to the stern (back) of their own craft and begin to paddle. This will only work in calm water with little or no wind. This "stern to bow" attachment will seriously hampers your steering ability, and drastically slow you down as you fight to keep your own boat on coarse. That rope yanking sideways on your stern with every course correction will serious stop an other wise well initiated turn or course correction. So what does one do?

    1) Tie the Rope to the Middle of your Kayak or Canoe. Better Yet around your waist or under your shoulders - or use a Tow Harness.

    A. Tie the tow rope to middle pivot point of your boat & to the Bow of the Craft you are towing.
The middle pivot point enables you to maintain total maneuverability. One can turn easily and unhindered in either direction. This tow line (Photo Left) is tied behind the cockpit of a single seat Sea Kayak.

    B. One can buy a tow harness, that fits around the shoulders or waist:
However, this expense is not necessary for the recreational paddler. Simply wrap the rope around your waist or under your arms. This is actually better if you have a Kayak rudder, as the rope rides higher over the stern of the boat and will not hook your tail rudder or lines. However, I still not not see the wisdom of being tied to another boat in rough seas- one could get tangled. None the less its one of the best and most effective procedures. The tow harness is a must for a long haul as the rope could chaff you over long distances. However, if it assists an injured party who cares right?

    2) Get a Clip for the towing end & A Float - It's Safer!

Tying to the bow of the boat you wish to tow is great. However, we often recommend a clip or carbiner on the towing end- one can clip quickly to the boat needing assistance and be out of the way very swiftly in rough seas. One does not need two boats banging together while trying to tie some knot. You may also get swamped too. Note the clip in the photo.
A small float on the toss end is a must. It will keep the line afloat if tossed.

    3) Always Daisy Chain (Chain Sinnet) A Towing line.
Link to instructions and pictures of a daisy chain

A coiled line (especially a nylon rope or small skinny lines) will almost always tangle when being unwound or tossed. I'm a Fishermen and know all about it. A Daisy chain will prevent any tangling. and the rope is much more compact for easy storage.

This 25 foot Nylon Towing line is only a little over 3 feet long in a daisy chain.
It will unwind easily with a pull. Hook on to the other kayak as you pass by and keep paddling ahead, it unties itself without knotting. If you need to toss the line simply pull out the length you need and toss.

My wife calls this "Hand Crocheting". It's actually the very same stitch.

But that sounds to girly to me.

I could never tell you to "hand crochet" your lines.

    "Chain Sinnet" sounds cooler :-)

The Final loop of a Daisy Chain, if pulled tight, will prevent the Daisy Chain from coming undone. However one can prevent an accidental unwinding by placing your clip into the last loop as you see here. Clip to the loop.
If you only wish to extend - say half- the line for closer towing, keep a spare clip attached to the line. Where ever you put that spare clip through the middle of the line - it will stop winding there and you only have to daisy chain your way back a shorter distance. How cool is that?

Notice that I do not have the required float on this line - I'm simply showing how to clip this loop so it will not unravel. Put a small float on there.

Conclusion: Towing can get tiring quickly, so pick the nearest safe landing spot if it's an emergency.
However, I have noticed that when towing another single kayak, I only drop about 1.5 km per hour on my average cruising speed for the first hour. However, after that time you get very tired. If you need to make distance quickly, taking turns in a group can get an injured partner to a safe landing zone and help with little loss in speed or time. A canoe is much slower however.

    Happy sailing and Safe towing.
  • Kildare River & Circumnavigating Oulton's Island
Where: We put off at the head of Kildare River Prince Edward Island.

Distance: 8 KM total. Kildare, around Oulton's Island, into Nortport Harbour, and back.

My 63 year old Mother-in-law and I launched at 6 Am.

And here is what we found.

    And Osprey fishing

Mother- in- Law She is 63 and her first time out in a Single solo Kayak.

A Bow Shot as we cross the bay and arrive at the eastern tip of Oulton's Island.

We circled the island and beached on the western side. We could hear the nesting Blue Herons, and Cormorant making a great racket.

A nesting Blue Heron. I did not wish to get to close for a Great cormorant was in the tree beside him waiting for an opportunity to steel it's egg.

The reality of a nesting Bird Colony - easy feeing for carnivorous animals

    A Dead Baby Great Cormorant.

    Bald Eagle Nest
. I did not see the nest while climbing a bank to take a picture of the red berries below. My Mother- in- law asked, "Are you taking a picture of that Bald Eagle?" - "What bald eagle" as it flew a way.

Rule #1 Always look around as round as you walk.

Yes, I know. They're just Dandelions. But it's a nice picture is it not?

What is this plant with these red berries ? You tel me please in the comments section.

    Is this Queen Annes Lace?

We cross back across the Bay and decide to head into Northport harbour.

Men are working on their Blue Fin Tuna rods. The season is about to open.

A vessel used for Snow Crab fishing.

Fishermen talking with nothing to do. No fish worth chasing at the price being offered. Also fish buyers & plants high on the big money made during the Lobster and Crab season are slow to find markets for lower profit fish after the Lobster season.

The last point before we end out journey
5 Blue Herons feeding. They are had to get close to at any time.

A piece of the dock that we found interesting.

    Hope you enjoyed this adventure?
  • Cascumpec, Black Banks, & Barrier Islands
We launched for our Adventure on the Southern end of Cascumpec Bay. My three teen sons and Marg, my Mother in Law all came. Do you see our Border Collie Dog in the back hatch? She loves to come along.

This is My Wife in her "Sea Knife Fierce"

This 16 foot Sea Kayak handles like a dream.

Approaching the Black Banks. These bank are on the edge of the saltwater bay. They are called Black because they are pure Black Peat Moss. Yes the stuff used in Gardens and flower pots. Out behind these banks are fields where the Peat Moss is harvested with huge vacuum machines and baled for sale.

A Bow shot as we approach the black banks.

Peat is Soft and Spongy and light.
It is ancient plant life. So it contains roots and twigs of old forests.

Crossing the Black Banks We look over to our destination. A Sand Dune barrier island protecting the bay from the open ocean. This Island is about 4 miles Long. But only several hundred metes wide. The Various barrier Sand Dune islands extend for almost 30 miles.

We landed and hiked through this sand gully to the out side shore.

The Sand dunes on the outside shore on the sea side of the island.

You can see both sides of the Sand Dune Island here. On the right is Cascumpec Bay leading into the Conway Narrows. The Left is the open sea of the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Miles of deserted Beach in any direction.
    What an Adventure.
  • Almost Hog Island- North Shore of Prince Edward Island
We launched for a day trip from Milligan's wharf and landed on the second last barrier island. We were going to go over to Hog Island, but one of our troupe got a bit tired and we finally ditched at the last minute on to the end of the next barrier sand dune island north of Hog Island.
Here's the tired soul resting. :-)

It is a full days adventure to hike the length of this island beach and back. We will get back another time, as we did not get to hike more than half of the island this time.

There was a stiff east wind. So it was a bit cool, but no bugs. We actually hauled home a few very new buoys, and new swivels off of broken buoys for my dad to use. Hey, free washed up salvage fishing gear, like new. It's like a yard sale with no one around to bother you and a better price. As usual, we had miles and miles of sandy beach and not a person to see all day. What a relaxing day with the family. Enjoy!

Click both of these links below. Some Mac's do not work on Live map.But it is the better map with push pins. We landed on the south tip of the second Island and hiked north on the eastern shore.

  • What to pack when backpacking in Central America

We decided a few years ago to be the carry-on only type of traveler. It doesn't matter if we are going for only a day, a week, or over a month of travel. We only bring what we can carry-on the plane. This has forced us to really think about what we pack. We've never regretted packing less. Each trip we take we hone our list even further.

What follows are photos and detailed lists of absolutely everything we currently have with us on our month-long Central American trip.

  • Ah, the joys of traveling and accidentally trying ?
Ah, the joys of traveling and accidentally trying new things...
  • Travel Essentials

Over the past few years I’ve collected what I now consider to be a few travel essentials. These are items that have made traveling easier, more comfortable, and sometimes much more convenient. Hopefully some of these items can help you out during your travels.

    Travel Docket
It’s basically a big wallet for your passport, travel documents, credit cards, etc. Having done three international trips with one I can’t imagine going without. If you’re the type of person who just puts your passport in a money belt or backpack pocket you should think about converting. If you can remember to always put your important information in the docket you’ll never panic and search through pockets again. I also keep my main stash of cash in my docket. That way I’m able to just throw my docket in the hotel/hostel safe or make sure it’s with me.

Currently I’m using the Blurr Travel Docket - Available at MEC

    Pen
Don’t laugh. Next time they pass out border crossing/immigration cards on the plane watch how many people do not have a pen. I keep my pen attached to the pen loop in my docket. This allows me to always have it with me when I need it and when my wife and I travel we both carry one. By having your own pen handy you are never stuck waiting at those little tables that have two pens on them for an entire airplane load of passengers. By carrying your own pen you’ll often be one of the first people through customs.

    Fake Wallet
This is perhaps the wackiest of essentials. When traveling I always carry a small fake wallet with old expired credit cards, my old university student ID, some local money (just enough for the day's activities). What is this fake wallet for? If I'm mugged/robbed I will gladly hand it over. There is enough content that it would look real. All I would lose is the day's worth of cash. If I have to carry more than a days worth (or carry an activated VISA, I carry those loose in my front pockets. I'm hoping that if I'm mugged and hand over my fake wallet the thief will assume that is all I have on me.

    Watch
I only wear a watch during two activities: Hiking & traveling. I use a Timex Expedition. One of the features I like most is that I can set a traveling time and a home time. One button press and I can see what time it is back home. Make sure you keep track of daylight savings. In Portugal this year we missed a bus because the time had jumped ahead without us realizing it. It’s also used regularly as an alarm clock

    Headlamp or Small Flashlight
This may seem silly but you would be surprised how often you’ll find yourself using this. If you stay in a hostel room shared with strangers you’ll appreciate the discreteness of being able to get up in the dark and use the light to find your way. If you are dong any sort of travel to a third world country you’ll find that sometimes (depending on location) the power goes off. Headlamps and flashlights are much easier to manage than candles. If you’re doing any sort of adventure travel you’ll need a headlamp for sure. Make sure your choice is an LED based light. It will last much longer on one set of batteries.

Currently I use the Petzl Tikka XP - available at MEC

    Noise Cancellation Headphones
This falls into the luxury department. When on a multi-hour flight you will appreciate the escape from the drone of the plane. If you’ve never had a part of noise cancellation headphones on during a flight you don’t know what you’re missing! I currently use a pair of older and cheap Aiwa NC headphones. I’ve tried the Bose Quiet Comforts and they are worth the extra money. Some prefer the in-ear method of noise cancellation for headphones. I’ve never tried them but all initial reports are positive.

    Airplane Headphone Adapter
Most travel headphones/noise cancellation headphones now come with one by default. If you don’t have one I’m sure you can get one at an electronics store. This little two dollar gem will allow you to enjoy the in flight entertainment with your own headphones.

    Rain Jacket
A light rain jacket goes a long way to improving your travel comfort. It makes dashes to cabs, waiting for trains, and standing in line outdoors manageable. With a good quality jacket you can stay dry in the elements while everyone else runs for cover. There is no better way to get ahead of a large throng or see a place without crowds if you go or stay in the rain!

Currently I use the MEC Targa. An expensive Gore-Tex jacket from MEC. Much cheaper alternatives will serve you just as well.

    Lonely Planet Phrasebooks
Are you going to a country or place that you are unfamiliar with the language? We’ve found the Lonely Planet phrasebooks to be the best quick references. Even if most of the people you come across during your travels speak English it is fun to learn a new language and locals truly do appreciate the effort. Our phrasebooks have also gotten us through situations where otherwise communication would have been impossible.

    Carry-On Only Bag
This is more of a philosophy than a travel essential. My wife and I now travel carry-on only. Once you switch over you’ll never go back. With only carry on you’re the first through customs. You never worry about losing your bag, and the simplicity of only having one bag makes traveling much more comfortable. Traveling is already full of choice and stress. We’ve found that having more ?stuff? with you only amplifies this. By not checking bags you are also free to switch flights without hassle. Current airline rules & laws do not allow you travel on a different plane than your checked baggage. With just carry-on you are free to try and get a better route, make tighter connections, and run like heck through airports!

My current, and the absolute best I’ve found, travel bag is the Osprey Porter 46. It just barely passes most airlines carry-on size limitations. It also is built to take a beating. You won’t go wrong with this bag.

    Airport/Maple Leaf Lounge Access
Airports are not nice places to be. They are designed for people to flow through, not spend time in. Lounges are places that are built to spend time in. It costs a little extra but it’s worth it. We’ve been in Air Canada lounges in Europe and Canada and have nothing but good things to say about them. Free food, free drinks, free Internet, comfortable chairs/couches/washrooms, and in international arrival lounges you can have a shower and get an entire large bathroom to yourself. While they are expensive you need to take into account how much you spend on airport food and entertainment. As in the lounges all food and entertainment (free tv, free magazines, etc) is free it starts to look much more economical. We also raid the drinks fridge and stock our bags with bottles of water and juice before we leave. As airports seem to charge four times the regular world price for these things it’s worth it.

The icing on the cake is that the airport public intercom does not transmit into lounges. Peace and quiet.

    Sleeping Pills
Probably the most controversial item in the list. We often use these on overnight flights that precede a full day of more travel or activity. There is nothing quite like wanting desperately to fall asleep but because of noise, temperature, excitement, or that annoying kid who keeps kicking the back of your seat, you can’t. By knocking ourselves out we usually awake rested and ready for another full day of fun. Combine this with a shower and breakfast in an arrival lounge after a red-eye and you are all set.

    We use generic diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

  • Serrano Hotel Review ? San Francisco, California

Last week I had the pleasure of staying in this hotel while in San Francisco for meetings. I hadn't picked the hotel, it was a Priceline purchase. The lobby of the hotel is swank'esque with groups of four nice plush chairs focused around tables. On each table is a classic board game (i.e. Scrabble). Organic fair trade certified coffee is served in the lobby during the morning and local beer & wines are served in the evening.

A few thoughts on the hotel:

    • Staff were all very helpful and friendly. The door staff were particularly so
    • The rooms were well appointed with large comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and the usual hotel room chair. The decor was nice but not over-the-top
    • For an Internet tycoon like myself it was nice to see that high-speed Internet was included
    • Excellent Location. A mere two blocks from Union Square
    • Rooms were bigger than others I've stayed in in the area (King George Hotel)
    • Laundry service was quick and professional
    • Parking is expensive (40.00/night). Hybrids park free

Overall a great hotel in a great area. Posted prices were expensive but Priceline solved that. You shouldn't be disappointed staying at the Serrano.

  • Punta Banco Costa Rica
Alright, so this was the last part of my vacation. Had to take this little local flight from San Jose, down to a place called Golfito. From there, it was a 2 hour cab ride to Punta Banco, where my girlfriend is doing some research. Here was the tin can we flew in:

Did manage to get some nice aerial shots though.

So after the cab right, we made it to Punta Banco. The road was pretty rough along the way.

But we finally made it to this place called the Yoga Farm. We stayed there for the first 2 nights, but had to climb up this nightmare of a hill. It was steep, and long as hell.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

But we finally made it up there, and the place was much nicer than I thought. It's an organic farm type thing, and everything is done environmentally friendly. They have a little bit of solar power, and they have a compostable toilet:

And a shower that uses rain water:

Here was our bed, complete with fly net:

So like the name says, it is a Yoga farm, so people go there primarily for Yoga, although they are trying to set themselves up as a research base too. But here was the Yoga part:

Had a great view as well, since it was so high up.

So after a few days at the Yoga Farm, it was time to head out to the part where Rosayln would be doing her research from. We made arrangements to stay with a local indigenous family for a couple of nights. This involved a 3 hour walk on the beach.

After walking for 90 minutes, I was pretty much ready to die, but we took a break thank god for 90 minutes. Here is the wife of Moe and their little girl. They were the local indigineous family we stayed with

So after walking for over 2 hours, we were taking another break at this little rock face. Or so I thought. Turns out, we had to climb it to make it to Moe's. Here's part of it, along with Moe.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

So we finally made it to Moe's little place, and it was a lot better set up then I thought it would be. We stayed in some tents

  • San Jose, Costa Rica
So the second part of my trip involved heading to Costa Rica. It was a hellish day getting there. Left Oxford, England at 5am, and arrived at our hotel like 26 hours later or something. Worth the trip though! We stayed the first 5 days at this sweet hotel called Hotel Bougainvillea. It was just outside San Jose, and it had this really cool garden. Was like 8 acres of plants and stuff

And this crazy butterfly has wings that look like an owls eyes to try and scare off predators. Pretty damn crazy.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Also went into San Jose one day too. Not a fan of the city at all, so these were the best pics I could get. Then a couple at the end show a bit how not pretty the capital is.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The real San Jose. Doesn't look too bad here, but it was not very pretty in the city. Like, note the gaps between the road and the sidewalk. Kind of dangerous

So that was basically the first half of Costa Rica. I've got a bunch more pictures of when we went into Southern Costa Rica. Much better pics, so I'll post those soon.
  • Edinburgh, Scotland
Oban was nice, but Edinburgh was definitely the best city I've ever seen. Very cool architecture. Sadlly, we didn't get to spend much time there, as we had missed our train from Oban back to Edinburgh, but I got some good pics still. The city is divided in 2. One side has the older, more historic part of town, the other is more modern. Here are a bunch of pics.

So those are some of the pics from the trip. I have hundreds more, so I'll post some more soon.
  • Vacation pics!
Here are a few choice pics I took from the UK. I'll start off with some pics of Oxford, and Oban Scotland.
My girlfriend is doing her masters in Oxford, which is about 90 minutes from London. This is kind of heading to downtown Oxford

Oxford didn't really impress me a whole lot, but they did have this sweet little pub called the Turf Tavern. It's very hard to find, but we made it there

Best part of the UK though was by far Scotland. Spent 4 nights up there. 2 in a place called Oban, and 2 in the capital of Edinburgh. Start off with some pics of Oban

Some dude wanted to build an homage to the Roman colisuem, but died before it was finished

We then took a ferry to the Isle of Mull, where we ended up getting stuck because we missed the last ferry. Had to spend a night in a tent, during a wind and rain storm. Good times

Here was the ferry we took. Comparable to our ferries, and took about 45 minutes to get there.

Here are a bunch of pics:

    So that was Oban.

    World-Class Cycling Returns to
Prince Edward Island with Tour de PEI

CHARLOTTETOWN ? Prince Edward Island?s seaside villages and idyllic countryside will be transformed into Canada?s most exciting new cycling destination with the return of Tour de PEI from June 8-12.

The inaugural race was named Road Event Organizer of the Year by the Canadian Cycling Association in 2007. The event is now attracting a growing amount of interest from athletes around the world.

One hundred female cyclists are expected to participate in the five-day, five-stage race. The new route highlights the Island?s scenic countryside and coastline for thousands of spectators and 600,000 television viewers who are expected to tune into a feature presentation of the race. Media coverage reached one million households during last year?s event.

?Tour de PEI is a perfect fit for Prince Edward Island because it showcases before the world everything the province has to offer,? said the Honourable Valerie Docherty, Minister of Tourism and Honourary President of Tour de PEI. ?This event is more than a bike race as it presents Prince Edward Island to the world.?

The participating athletes will cross scenic but challenging terrain covering a total of 403 kilometres, including a 120 kilometre-long race across the hilliest regions in central PEI.

A highlight of the race will take place on Monday, June 9, when cyclists will race in a time trial across the 12.9-kilometre-long Confederation Bridge. The bridge will be closed between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on that day. (Read more....)

  • Experience The PEI Lobster Supper!

Another Prince Edward Island tradition, The Lobster Supper...I have to tell you. Tonight a group of about twelve of us got together for this fabulous experience.

Fresh PEI Lobster in the shell, Fresh PEI potato salad, fresh home made rolls with real butter and a variety of finger deserts. If you don't think that it is a special experience just read what Marialisa Calta of the Globe and Mail has to say. (Perhaps you might consider a visit to our Hidden Island Paradise just for The Lobster Supper experience)

SOURIS, PEI -- Sure, we've got spectacular scenery and untamed wilderness,
but with the country's burgeoning wine regions and

    regional cuisines drawing international accolades,

Canada has a lot to offer the travelling gourmand

Every year, when my husband, two daughters and I make our annual trek to Prince Edward Island, I take the "seafood pledge" -- that no meat shall pass my lips for the duration of my stay in this seafood paradise. It's a pledge I keep happily and, with the exception of an occasional turkey sandwich or a burger, almost successfully. PEI is awash in mussels, oysters, clams, lobster and fish, including Atlantic salmon, char, haddock and cod.

Because we were once campers and now own a cabin on the island, we've done most of the cooking of grilled, fresh fish ourselves.

The island offers the ubiquitous battered-and-fried fish joints and a number of fine dining establishments, but for budget-minded travellers like us with kids in tow, the perfect compromise -- offering fresh seafood, family-friendly atmosphere and excellent prices -- is the PEI lobster supper.

    Wednesday, February 14 (Valentine's Day!)

Another fine day in Europe. We are mellowing on the train from Budapest to Vienna. Made it with 2 minutes to spare! A fine breakfast was had by all this morning and then we proceeded to the Budapest Zoo. After a few moments of lameness, it ended up being an amazing afternoon. ...from Ducks to Elephants! After a very reasonably priced meal at a chi-chi MacDonald's we went to the House of Terror which depicted Nazi and Soviet Occupations. Very interesting. And here we are on the train. So, we all had an awesome day in Budapest.
