    After a fun-filled afternoon in the Murphy Student Centre we now have a GREAT NAFTA Script - we'll certainly give best adapted screenplay winner from this past weekend's OSCARS a run for their money!

    Reminder that there is an important meeting for tomorrow in Kelley, around 3pm. With special guest YOGI FELL! After that @ 4.15 will be the unveiling for the scripts for imput from those who were unable to attend the script writing meeting.

  • Grad Supper & Workcamp Yardsale
    Hey there Solid Rockers! What a blast at Mudblast this weekend! You can check out the pictures on the Facebook site "Solid Rock Youth Charlottetown". It was a great time and many thanx to all the youth and leaders that made it all happen!

    This Wednesday night is Grad Supper Night where all the grade 12's are treated to a meal to honour their graduation. Meal begins at 6pm at Mackenzie's, then the church, then over to the Austins for desert and campfire. Things will come to a close from there at 9pm.

    The Group Workcamp crew is less than a month away from their trip to Rhode Island and this Saturday they are having a Yard Sale from the church from 9-12. All workcampers need to watch their emails for times to be there.

  • What To Bring For Mudblast
    Mudblast 08 is just two days away so get some rest and don't forget to bring the following items along with you:

    Enough clothes for three days, two large towels, swim shorts, T-shirts, one old pair of sneakers for canoeing, one good pair for running around, sleeping bag, blanket, pillow, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo...rain jacket, and whatever else you know you need.

    If you have not paid the final payment please bring it tonight or on Friday when we leave.Also please bring along a supper snack as we will not be eating until later that night (no supper at Camp)Camp Wildwood's phone number is (506)743-2757 and Pastor Chris' number is 393-3747.

    We should be back on the Island by 3:30 on Sunday afternoon.
  • Solid Rock Rake, Run and Retreat!
    Hey there rockers! This week we're raking, running and retreating at Mudblast.

    On Wednesday please bring a leaf rake as we're doing some good for a couple of needy families. We'll be meeting at the church, and we'll be back by 9:00pm.

    On Friday we're off to Camp Wildwood for our Mudblast retreat. Please meet at the church at 4:30 and we'll be returning on Sunday by 3:30. Mudblast is full but if you want to go please talk to Chris about it. (we want to try to fit everyone in)

    Mudblast supplies are: sleeping bag, pillow, blanket, two big towels, swimsuit, clothes for two days, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, flashlight, shampoo, two pairs of sneakers, (one old pair for canoeing), and whatever else you know you need. It's gonna be another great time!

  • IT'S HISTORY
    Well the reunion is over, what a great turn out, we are only begining to start to count.
    There were many surprises. We had some parents come out, Kitty Macleod, Mrs McGee, The Smith's Ronnie Maclean and others I may have missed. Alot of people went to a great effort to show up.
    I'm reminded of a line from Henry V "men in their beds asleep will think themselves acursed they were not here this day"
    We took alot of pictures, I'll post some and the rest will be available as a DVD in story form with music. We will sell them a little over cost with the profit going to the school.
    Also if anyone wants a copy of the video that was shown during the opening, please contact me.

It also acts as a clearing house for information received from other education sources. The Association is made up of 6 trustee representatives and an elected President at large.

  • Professional Development Weekend - Nov. 17-18
    This weekend the PEISTA is hosting a professional development weekend at the Loyalist Lakeview Resort on Harbour Drive in Summerside. On Friday evening we will open with dinner (salmon or chicken), followed by private meetings for all three Island boards, and then an evening of entertainment. (Bring your singing voices - we have karaoke!)

    On Saturday morning, Linda Lowther from the Department of Education will present a report card on the recent Provincial Task Force on Education. The presentation will begin at 9:00 a.m., following a buffet breakfast.

    Hope to see you all there!

    Oh, and take note of the PD weekend password: Rockets. The first trustee to provide the password, when asked (not before!), will win a prize.
  • Atlantic Conference 2007 in Charlottetown!
    On January 25, 26 and 27, 2007, the PEISTA will be hosting the annual Atlantic Conference of School Board Trustees. The event will be held at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, and our keynote speaker is Lt.Col. Dave Grossman, expert in media violence and its effects on children.

  • Special Meeting of the PEISTA
    A Special Meeting of the PEISTA will be held on Monday, September 25th, 2006 at the Eastern School District offices in Stratford, starting at 7:30 p.m. We will be deciding if we wish to remain a member of the CSBA. The president of the CSBA, Mr. Lance Bean, will be available for questions or comments on the telephone.
    Mark you calendar, this date is important. Our future with CSBA depends on your presence. Please, ensure your vote is counted.

    Last June 6th, the PEISTA held its 2005-06 AGM in Summerside. The turn-out was good, and we had a good chance to discuss some important issues. The President presented the Blog to all trustees present. Also, it was a great opportunity to look at the draft program of the Atlantic Conference 2007 being hosted by the STA. Another general meeting of the Association will likely occur in September regarding our status with the CSBA. Thanks to all who came! You are the Association!

Seniors College of Prince Edward Island - Seniors College of PEI - is affiliated with UPEI, and offers a variety of educational opportunities for member of the 50+ organization. Based on the peer-learning model it is a great way to have fun and learn new things.

  • Seniors College of P.E.I. gaining national attention

    Seniors College of P.E.I. has been asked to speak to the Special Senate Committee on Aging in Ottawa as part of a major investigation into the needs of older Canadians.

    Ian Scott, the president of Seniors College of P.E.I. will be speaking to the committee in Ottawa on aspects of Active Aging and Ageism which is part of the committee?s second interim report on April 28.

    Seniors College of P.E.I. now operates in Montague, Alberton, Summerside and Charlottetown with 527 members participating. Affiliated with UPEI and designed for those age 50 or older, the concept of active learning, and active living in retirement, is a worldwide phenomenon which continues to change the public view of seniors.

    Based on peer-learning in which members share their knowledge with others, the P.E.I. operation is co-ordinated by Bruce Garrity, who is assisted with each of the operations outside Charlottetown.

    Recently both Garrity and Scott spoke to a packed audience at Mount Allison, where a steering committee was formed to launch a similar operation.

    Earlier this year, a seniors college was launched in Halifax due to efforts of a past president Ivan Dowling, who encouraged colleagues who were retired faculty of the various universities there to work together, and spoke of the success of P.E.I. efforts.

    A seniors college also launched in Cape Breton with the encouragement of Clive Keen, while he was director of Life Long Learning at UPEI.

    A regional conference on learning in retirement hosted at UPEI by Senior College of P.E.I. in 2007 brought together representatives from seven provinces, and has helped spread the word even further.

    ?Learning in retirement is important to both individuals and their personal enjoyment but also the fact that governments are now recognizing the value that active learning plays in maintaining a healthy population, is significant,?? said Scott. ?Research continues to show the beneficial effects that new learning has on the brain, and the positive benefits of being active in a social environment to reduce isolation. It also happens to be great fun.??

    Seniors in the community could soon have access to more fun and engaging learning opportunities.

    A local steering committee was formed last week to get plans under way on the founding of a seniors college in the Sackville area, an initiative which would offer stimulating and affordable courses to the 55-and-over crowd.

    Heather Patterson, director of the continuous learning centre at Mount Allison University, organized the founding meeting at Convocation Hall last Thursday, which drew over 75 residents, and said she?s excited about the potential of a seniors college where local seniors can learn from their peers.

    ?We have so many wonderful seniors in the community with so much experience in many different areas. . . some very engaging, exciting, active and happening people.?

    The local project would be modeled on the successful P.E.I. seniors college, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. Ian Scott, president of the seniors college on the Island, said the organization has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade.

    ?We started out small. . . we had 45 students in the first year and we offered three courses. Now we have 527 students in four locations on the Island and we have over 100 programs,? said Scott, who was on hand last week to share ideas on how to get the project off the ground.

    The premise of the seniors college is based on peer learning, he explained.

    ?We are strong believers that we all have something to share and we?re never too old to learn.?

    One of the keys to its success has been the ability to access retired professors and educators in the area, said Scott, who want to teach about engaging, entertaining topics they are passionate about.

    ?Our teachers have a love affair with their courses and it shows.?

    The membership ? at $125 ? provides seniors the opportunity to take as many, or as few, courses as they would like during the semester ? classes that range from alternative medicine to computer skills, genealogy to painting, life writing to astronomy, and much more.

    The college co-ordinator Bruce Garrity said seniors can share skills, knowledge and experience with each other through their eight-week courses.

    ?This enhances the quality of life for seniors by providing them with professional-level courses and it also gives them the opportunity to experience the joy of learning.?

    The P.E.I. seniors? college is affiliated with UPEI ? and uses several facilities at the university - but is operated by a separate board.

    The local steering committee ? made up of Heather Patterson, Pat Dixon, Barb Jardine, Art Miller, Donna Capper, Janet Hammock and Erik Hulsman ? will develop the basic concept of how a seniors? college would work in the area and will present their findings to the public

    Seniors College had 525 members Island-wide and we thank you for membership and participation. The Board is again planning for more that 100 courses in 2008-09 and our annual Tabloid with all our offerings will be available in early September. As usual our annual registration will be in September with the actual date and time to be decided.

  • Seniors College - Montague, PEI
    Registration is planned for the first Seniors College programming in the Montague area, a landmark move for Islanders with programming now available in all three counties.
