Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)

Lake of Shining Waters IODE sponsored the first D.A.R.E. graduation on PEI at Somerset elementary school. Twenty-nine Grade 5 students received their certificates for completing the 17 week RCMP Course - Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
The course consists of 17 one-hour lessons on topics such as reducing violence, changing beliefs about drug use and building self-esteem. Const. Don Starnes (left) conducted this course. Cpl. Ken Murray is also a trained D.A.R.E. instructor.Racing Against Drugs

Lake of Shining Waters IODE is also a sponsor of the RCMP Racing Against Drugs program which is a drug education initiative to utilize the sport of car racing to capture the attention of young people and expose them to an exciting and high-profile sport - one with no tolerance for substance abuse.
Racing Against Drugs is designed to promote healthy drug-free lifestyles in the community. It is promoted locally by Corporal Ken Murray who drives number 97 at Raceway Park.
His car is a billboard which displays the slogans of Racing Against Drugs as well as a message from the students of Bluefield Senior High School against drunk driving with their slogan "Stay alive, don't drink and drive." The IODE logo and chapter name were painted on the car in the 1997 racing season. This program will be enhanced when tracks and remote control cars arrive in the Maritimes to further promote the program to youth with mall and other exhibition displays.
