What do the letters IODE stand for?

IODE was founded in 1900 by Margaret Polson Murray as Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. IODE, as the organization is now known, is a Canadian women's volunteer organization. Over the years, the organization has met the changing needs of all Canadians coast to coast, with a particular focus on children. There were approximately 1,062,774 volunteer hours given for the benefit of the community by IODE members in 1998.

There are approximately 7,855 members working in 369 primary chapters all across Canada. Members across the country raise approximately $3,000,000 every year and reinvest it in Canada's children, families and communities. Lake of Shining Waters IODE, Charlottetown, PEI is but one of these primary chapters serving the community with IODE "good works" projects.

Who can belong?

New members are always welcome. Membership is open to Canadian women of all ages, backgrounds and interests. We presently have 19 members in our chapter. Lake of Shining Waters IODE address is:

What is the time commitment of members?

IODE has no minimum time commitment; members contribute as much or as little time as they wish. Chapter meetings are held once a month. National and Provincial meetings are held annually.

Is it expensive to join?

NO! Annual fees average $25. Members work together at a variety of fundraising activities to finance the organization's objectives.

Significance of the badge:

The badge is the emblem of membership in IODE. The seven pointed star on a dark blue background has at its center the Union Jack, showing our pride that Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. the surrounding white circle embodying the name of the organization in gold lettering is securely clasped at the base and symbolizes the unity of purpose of all members. The crown surrounding the badge represents loyalty to the Queen of Canada.

100 Years Logo

100 Anniversary IODE Celebrates 100 Years of community service on 13 February 2000.

IODE is committed to raising $200,000. to fund an ongoing grant program to alleviate abuse and neglect.
