PEI Woman Abuse Protocols
Phase One

Phase One, the Assessment Phase, began on February 1, 1999 and included a workshop with sixty five policy makers and service providers, community groups and survivors of woman abuse, to identify current policies and procedures in place as well as policy gaps.

As a result of the workshop, there were several messages that emerged that have been carried through to Phase 2 as basic principles:

"Survivors of woman abuse and community organizations must be significantly involved in policy development and evaluation."
and
"Women need to have decision- making power over issues that affect their future. As service providers, we need to offer options and trust women to make choices."

To assist the work of Phase 2, the "Policy and Protocol Gap Map: A guide to the woman abuse protocol and service assets and needs of Prince Edward Island" was developed. As a result of the workshop, three sectors, Justice, Hospital Emergency and Income Assistance, were targeted for work in Phase 2, the Development Phase.
