Acadian literature promoted
The provincial government presented books by, and about, Island Acadians to representatives of Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer (Normandy, France) when they recently visited the Island. For the past three years, Saint-Aubin has celebrated “Acadian Week” in Aug in honour of Acadian soldiers who helped liberate the town in June 1944. The program of activities of this week-long festival features shows by Acadian artists, photography exhibits, commemorative ceremonies, screening of documentaries, historical conferences and a tintamarre (noise parade). “The province of PEI has been asked to be the guest of honour at the 2009 edition of Acadian Week in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer,” said Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs, Carolyn Bertram. “While we explore the possibility of taking part in the event, we felt that, in this year of commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Deportation of Island Acadians, it was fitting to share some of our province’s Acadian history with the residents of Saint-Aubin.” Included among the books are works by well-known Island historian Georges Arsenault and by Alice Richard that will provide insight on Acadian culture and heritage specific to PEI.
Writers’ Guild
Writers from Eastern King’s County are invited to attend meetings of the Montague Library Writers’ Guild. Meetings will be held at 7 pm in the Montague Public Library and convene every sixth Thur evening (from Sept 25). The Writers’ Guild will work towards the publication of a book of poems and prose illustrating a central theme, said theme to be established during the first few meetings. As well as working on pieces that focus on their book’s theme, Guild members will support each other’s individual endeavours to create prose and poetry and provide helpful advice and positive, constructive criticism.
