COMMUNITY
Fall Flavours packs over 130 culinary and cultural events into 6 days from September 30 to October 5, with events taking place in communities across the Island. A 12-foot, steel sunflower now stands outside Founders’ Hall as a sign of the beginning of the harvest. The sunflower is the work of art of Malpeque Fine Iron Products, in Lower New Annan.
On October 2, Chef Michael will team up with The PEI Association of Chefs and Cooks for Gala by the Sea at Dalvay by the Sea. This menu will be composed of ingredients that are grown, farmed, harvested, produced and/or fished locally on PEI. The seven-course menu will be complimented by five carefully chosen wines.
Join PEI’s farmers as they team up with Chef Michael and the Island’s top culinary artisans (2008 Taste Our Island featured nominees) to prepare their favorite dishes using one hundred percent locally grown products. Each chef/farmer team will produce a dish. The Taste Our Island Roving Feast takes place at Confederation Centre of the Arts on October 3 at 6 pm.
The Charlottetown Seaport will host the Island’s 1st Annual Handcrafted Ales & Wine Festival presented by the Charlottetown Airport Authority on October 4 from 2–5pm or 7–10 pm. Wine enthusiasts and beer connoisseurs will enjoy complimentary tastings of over 75 fine wines, 40 brews, local spirits and live Island music in a relaxed waterfront setting with cheeses provided by ADL.
PEI has a rich bounty of quality organic food products. The Organic Harvest Meal offers an opportunity to celebrate the rich bounty of organic food produced on the Island and the people who grow it. There will also be a keynote address by Chef Michael and an awards ceremony at the Delta Prince Edward on October 4.
It’s Farm Day in the City on October 5, from 11 am–5 pm. The theme is the International Year of the Potato. Chef Michael will prepare and serve piping hot potatoes with sauces from the Cuisine Machine. Local beef, pork, chicken, lamb and veggies will be grilled and served. And there’s also corn dipped in freshly melted butter. A farmer’s market will top off the event along with local musicians, interactive activities, a pumpkin fair, fresh-pressed apple cider, and a Food Bank fund raiser.
The grand finale will be an intimate evening with Chef Michael Smith at The Inn at Bay Fortune, his home kitchen for many years. Winemaker John Rossignol of Rossignol Estate Winery will pour his best while Michael and the kitchen team prepare a five course tasting menu celebrating the best of the Island and the season. Also joining in the fun will be the moonshine masters from Myriad View Artisan Distillery and Canada’s first potato vodka producers from Prince Edward Distillery.
The Annual PEI Studio Tour is in its 10th year and was designed to promote PEI’s diverse and fascinating artisan workshops and studios.
