    Beaconsfield Children’s Festival
    Beaconsfield Children’s Festival presents theatrical performances Mon-Fri at 11 am. Two new children’s musicals written and directed by Lisa Carmody of Charlottetown feature the Troubadour Children’s Theatre. Adventures in La La Land runs on Mon and Fri and Once Upon a Rhyme plays Tue, Wed, Thur. The Beaconsfield Children’s Festival takes place from July 14 to Aug 29 for all ages in Beaconsfield’s Carriage House located at the corner of West and Kent Streets in Charlottetown.     Drama classes
    Drama classes resume Sept 13: class for ages 5-15 will be held from 10:00-11:30 am; a play-writing class for ages 10-15 will be held from 12-2 pm.     Young@Arts Art-Eco Camp
    Let your child learn through doing at the Young@Arts Art-Eco Camp for youth ages 11-14. Organized in partnership with the Confederation Centre and Parks Canada National Park, the camp activities will focus on the connection between nature and the arts and will explore natural themes relating to ecological integrity issues in the park. Each day campers will meet with Park experts to learn about ecological issues and then explore them through arts-related activities. Campers will have the chance to explore diverse pond life, delicate dune ecosystems, age-old forests and the heritage that developed in the area. Campers will be able to experiment with both conventional art and other incorporations of art from the natural environment. Many different styles will be explored from instruction in scientific sketching, to land art, painting, sculpture, sand casting and performance art. The camp will highlight the importance of ecological integrity while encouraging creative experiences in a hands-on learning environment. The program runs daily in Cavendish Grove (former Rainbow Valley site) from Aug 4-8, 9 am-4 pm, in indoor and outdoor facilities. Info or to register: 628-6111, artgallery@confederationcentre.com

    Sharing a Love of Nature
    “Sharing a Love of Nature” programs take place at the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead in Orwell this summer: Aug 4-8 for ages 10-12; and Aug18-22 for ages 6-12. Children will learn about birds, forests, wildflowers, amphibians, water and mammals and take part in a wide variety of nature-related activities and games.     French summer day camps
    Register now for CPF-PEI French summer day camps. Students in grades 1-6 in French Immersion or French language will have the opportunity to use their French skills, explore French culture and themes such as Celebrating holidays, Sports and Leisure and Games and Challenges. Camps will include sports, games, artistic activities, and swimming. The camps will be held in Charlottetown, Summerside and Montague during Aug. Youth 9-17 years of age can participate in Magdalene Island camps sponsored by CPF-P.E.I. Gail at 368-7240

    Programs for youth at Wyatt
    Wyatt Heritage Properties offers seven different youth programs to young people between the ages of six and twelve. Geared towards children who enjoy learning with the hands on approach, the programs are filled with historic detail delivered in a fun-filled manner. Participants can take part in programs about metal works, papermaking, sandcasting, pirates, potatoes, artifacts, and the making of bread.     Upcoming Events in the Children’s Loft
    Confederation Centre Public Library (August 2008): Summer reading activities continue in the children’s loft area of the Confederation Centre Public Library. If you have not signed up for the summer reading club, there is still some time to do so. There are a few logbooks and posters left to be picked up. This year the theme of the TD Summer Reading Club all across Canada is LOL—Laugh out Loud/Lire aux Larmes. Activities with the LOL theme will continue until Aug 13. Programs for children ages 6-12 are: Aug 4 If I had a million Onions, Aug 5 is Jillian Jiggs and her wonderful pigs, Aug 7 Unusual/Funny Pets and a surprise, Aug 11 Board game morning. These programs start at 10 am. The last funny movie afternoon will be on Aug 4 at 1 pm movie TBA. There will be an Origami program for ages 6 and up on Aug 5. No need to bring any paper, but pre-registration is necessary as space is limited. Aug 6 is pet day for children ages 1-5. At 10 a m there will be a short puppet play. Bring your favourite stuffed toy and enjoy some laugh out loud animal stories. There will be a special visit from members of the PEI Humane Society. This is the last day to drop off a toy or treat for homeless animals at the Humane Society. The closing party for the summer reading club will be held on Aug 13 at 10 am. Certificates will be given out to those who have read and joined the club. There will be reading and refreshments served.     Five Houses Workshops
    Five Houses Summer Workshops offer sessions in fiddle, guitar, arts and crafts, fine art, writing, and drama at St. Peters Bay. The instructors are Marie McEachern, Tim Chaisson, Emily Carlaw, Joanne Talbot Quinn, Ellen Klien, and Beck Viau. On Aug 16 from 9 am-12 pm Creative Dramatics/Theatre Arts for teens and adults will be held at St. Peters Courthouse Theatre. Childrens Arts and Crafts takes place Aug 4-8 from 9-10:30 am at St. Peters Community Centre. Childrens Art takes place Aug 4-8 from 11-12:30 am at St. Peters Community Centre. Creative Arts and Theatre Arts will be held Aug 11-15 at St Peters Courthouse Theatre. Ellen Klein teaches Creative Dramatics/Theatre Arts from 9-10:30 am for ages 10 to 12 and Creative Dramatics/Theatre Arts from 11 am-1 pm for ages 13+. At St Peters Circle Club, Tim Chaisson will teach fiddle from 9-10:30 am for beginners and at 11 am-12:30 pm for beginners plus to advanced. From 1-2:30 pm Tim Chaisson will teach guitar for mixed levels. Drawing will take place at St. Peters Community Centre with Beck Viau from 9-10:30 am for ages 8 and under, from 11 am-12:30 pm for ages 8-12, and at 12:30 pm for ages 13-adult.     Red Cross day camps
    Canadian Red Cross day camp program, which focuses on water safety, will be offered this year from six locations, including four beaches around the Island, as well as pools in Summerside and Charlottetown. The PEI government provides funding for the program including transportation by bus for participants. During the two-week sessions, children participate in a swimming program, and, depending on their age, take part in either the Junior Outdoor Club (ages 4 to 8) or the boating program (ages 9 to 15). Older youth learn canoeing and rowing skills, as well as rescue and survival techniques. Younger children learn about active living, first aid, outdoor and neighbourhood safety and protecting the environment. To register contact the Red Cross office in Charlottetown. Registration for day camps at the Credit Union Place pool in Summerside and the CARI Aquatics Facility in Charlottetown can be done on site. The beach locations for camps are: Souris, Tignish, West Point and Campbellton.

    Haunting Tales of Sunken Sails
    As the sun sets at Green Park Shipbuilding Museum in Port Hill on Aug 7, the spirits will rise from the deep to bring you an evening of mysterious happenings. Join story teller Wayne Wright for bone chilling tales by the shore of Campbell’s Creek while the kids play creepy games. As darkness falls, young and old will come together to walk our haunted path, where the voices of the past still linger. Conclude your evening with a daring entry into the 143 year old Gothic style home of James Yeo Jr for spine tingling stories of the supernatural shared by Gerald McNally and friends. Snacks, treats and refreshments will be served throughout the night.     Harness Racing Camp
    Book your adventure and experience the Harness Racing Camp—A Magical Summer Day at the Pinette Raceway located in the Eastern end of PEI. Learn the basics of horse safety and care, stall cleaning, grooming, basic anatomy and equipment, harnessing, and then take the reins for a ride around the oval with an experienced driver by your side , on one of the custom-made jog carts.     2008 Youth Talent Competition
    Various fairs and exhibitions are hosting The 2008 Youth Talent Competition on PEI this summer and are looking for talented Island Youth between the ages of 13 and 21 years to participate. This competition is open to singers, dancers, musicians and novelty acts. Maximum number per group of entertainers is 5 participants. Venues for the 2008 Youth Talent Competition are L’Exposition agricole et le Festival acadien (July 16); Prince County Exhibition (July 31); Kensington Community Harvest Festival (August 17); the Provincial Plowing Match and Agricultural Fair, Dundas (August 24) and the Eastern Kings Exhibition (September 12). Winners from each of these competitions will compete at the Youth Talent Search 2008 Provincial Championship on August 29. The provincial champion will represent PEI at the national competition in Saskatoon in November. Participants must register to enter.
