An “Evening with Stephen Lewis and Friends,” will be held at Confederation Centre, Charlottetown, on October 9 at 8 pm. Tickets are available at the box office.
Chair of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Mr. Lewis is also a foremost advocate for women’s rights and gender equity. He will be speaking to the courage and resilience of African women across the continent who are leading the response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
For the first half of the evening’s program, local and international performers, who are contributing their time, will join Stephen Lewis onstage. These will include Lennie Gallant and Ruth Mathiang.
The “Evening with Stephen Lewis and Friends” is part of a larger fundraising project called Women Making Waves (WMW). The first major event in this campaign was the successful double-crossing of the Northumberland Strait by swimmer Kristin Roe, on July 26th, 2008. The objective of the WMW campaign is to raise $100,000 by the end of 2008, to support women in Africa. About $35,000 of this has been raised so far.
