    Islanders recognized
    Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC), a UN-accredited Canadian organization promoting tolerance, justice and human rights, recently honoured local PEI heroes Rosalie Simeone, Jo-Anne White and Sandra Jones Ireland for their accomplishments promoting tolerance and human rights in their communities. A recognition ceremony took take place during the launch of Digital Terrorism and Hate 2.0, an annual report with interactive CD identifying some 8,000 online sources of hate and terrorism. The CD will be distributed to every Member of Parliament, provincial justice minister, as well as to police officers, educators, secondary school and college students, members of the community, and is available to the public upon request.

    Aboriginal entrepreneurs
    The 4th Atlantic Aboriginal Entrepreneur Awards Show was held in Charlottetown in Sept. The Awards Show gives Aboriginal people in Atlantic Canada the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the Aboriginal business sector successes in their region. Jury members gathered from all over Atlantic Canada to deliberate as a team and select the finalists and winners. Business of the Year went to Islanders Debbie Bernard, owner of Jake’s Kwik Way, Lennox Island, and Matilda Lewis, owner of Megadealsrus, Summerside.

    Young track athletes win
    Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, recently offered congratulations to track athletes Nathan Comeau and Curtis Arsenault, who recently won silver and bronze medals respectively at the Jeux de la francophonie canadienne (Canadian Francophone Games) in Edmonton. Nathan won silver in the boy’s long jump in the 14-15 age group, while Curtis won the bronze medal in the boy’s 800m, also in the 14-15 age group. Nathan is from Charlottetown and Curtis is from the Évangéline region.

    Best places to play golf
    The Links at Crowbush Cove and Dundarave golf courses both received 4.5 out of five star rating by the Golf Digest’s 2008-2009 edition of Best Places to Play. Golf Digest readers rated the courses based on overall experience, service, value and pace of play. Brudenell and Mill River provincial golf courses received four star ratings in the 2008-2009 edition of Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play.

    From Pillar to Post
    The West Prince People First group present a new DVD, From Pillar to Post. From Pillar to Post is an original play written by Vian Emery, based on the stories of young people with intellectual disabilities who are living in long-term care facilities because they do not have access to supports that would allow them to live more independently in the community.     Friendship Fence Project
    The Dr. Marlene Bryenton Ghiz Park Fund is seeking nineteen $1000 wrought iron post sponsors for the Friendship Fence Project at the Joseph A. Ghiz Memorial Park, Charlottetown. The wrought iron entrance gates have been installed in phase I of the project.     Strategies for Caregivers
    The Learning Disabilities Association of PEI has announced a new program, Strategies for Caregivers: Coping with Learning Disabilities and ADD/ADHD, a United Way of PEI funded project. It has been created in response to the needs of PEI caregivers of children with learning disabilities and/or ADD/ADHD. The goal for the program is reducing parent/caregiver emotional stress and stress associated with daily living through providing personalized support services, offering practical strategies and skills development in coping with stress and accessing community and educational resources.     Disability Services Review
    Phase one of the Disability Services Review is now available at www.gov.pe.ca/photos/ original/SSS_DSRP1.pdf or by calling Island Information Service at 368-4000 or 1-800-236-5196. The Review is a compilation of information gathered from public consultations, written submissions and an online questionnaire. Phase two of the Disability Services Review is underway.

    Stratford Transit System
    The Stratford Transit System is now in service and will initially run from Mon to Fri with three runs in the morning into Charlottetown and two runs in the evening from Charlottetown. Users may transfer anywhere on the system once they have paid the $2 fare. There will be one bus doing the loop around the Bunbury Road, Mason Road and Shakespeare Drive and the other bus will loop around the Kinlock Road, through the Beacon Hill and Eastern Realties subdivisions and then back via the Keppoch and Stratford Road. Trius Tours is the agency responsible for the operation and management of the municipal transit system throughout Stratford, which will link to the previously established Charlottetown Transit.

    Home Coming Weekend
    First Baptist Church Charlottetown Home Coming Weekend is scheduled for Oct 24–26. The theme is “Celebrating Our History & Our Hopes.” The Church is celebrating 50 years of serving God from the corner of Fitzroy and Prince Streets. On Fri evening Dino Dunsford & The Harmonies will present a gospel concert, and Saturday evening a supper will be held at the Belvedere Curling Club.     Red Tent Gathering
    In the tradition of The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, you are invited to attend a Red Tent Gathering celebrating womanhood—experiences as women throughout the life cycle (menarch, pregnancy, birth, menopause). The gathering takes place on Nov 1 in Charlottetown from 10 am–4 pm. Activities will include working with clay to find your inner goddess, ways to celebrate our daughters entry into womanhood, birthing practices and options, empowering menopause, belly dancing, and a book reading.     Hillsborough Eco Centre
    The Hillsborough Eco Centre located in the Village of Mount Stewart will be open until Nov. Available to the public are CAP site and the Library and of course the gift shop and the Eco Centre.     Build it Green
    Build it Green is a brief presentation and discussion focused on green building approaches for homes. It will take place at Breadalbane Public Library (Oct 1, 7:30–8:30 pm), Confederation Centre Public Library (Oct 21, 7–8 pm), and Murray Harbour Public Library (Oct 28, 7–8 pm).     Oct 5–13 participate in Pedal Points East Cycling Event. Pedal Points East is a scenic recreational cycling event for participants of all ages. Oct 5 rte is Brackley Point Rd.     Halloween Hustle
    1st Annual Halloween Hustle 5km Fun Run will start and finish at the Kensington Farmers Market (by the train station) Oct 25 with registration at 8 am and race starting at 9 am. This is a fundraiser for IWK and Kensington Fitplex (gym equipment). The course is flat out-and-back on the Confederation Trail leaving the Kensington Farmers Market heading west towards Summerside and back. Wear your best Halloween Costume.     Wo He Lo Clothing Sale
    Be sure to attend the Wo He Lo Club’s high quality used clothing sale at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Classroom A & B (third floor) on Oct 30, 8 am–8 pm and on Oct 31, 8 am–pm. Proceeds will be used to purchase an Overhead Infant Warmer for the Nursery.     Taoist Tai Chi Beginner Class

    Bad dogs
    Atlantic Veterinary College’s nationally recognized animal behaviourist, Dr. Norma Guy, will provide some insight into aggression in dogs, including why it occurs and how to prevent it from becoming a serious problem.
