“Kenny Smyth delivers and maintains portable toilets at public events. Going about his job armed with only his dignity and an unshakably upbeat disposition, he’s a guy that not a lot of people take the time to get to know. Their loss. Just when you thought the mockumentary was exhausted, along come the Jacobson brothers. Kenny might not be as outrageously hilarious as Borat or boast the starry ensemble of For Your Consideration, but it’s far superior to the latter and approaching the former in quality. There’s more to this than just a cracking sense of humour and a slew of Aussie colloquialisms (‘Mate, I’ve got a smell down here that’s gonna outlast religion’); there’s depth and simple, endearing heart in this rough-diamond story. The Jacobson siblings made a very wise choice in creating a character with what is, for all intents and purposes, a funny trade... Shying away from the obvious gags, they instead mould loo-supremo Kenny into a believable human being with all-too familiar problems... In front of the camera, Shane Jacobson is astonishingly comfortable in the title character... It’s also noteworthy as a family affair - three generations of Jacobsons appear on screen; their father Ron is a supporting standout as Kenny’s germ-freak curmudgeon of a dad. It’d be easy to say that the fly-on-the-wall style covers a multitude of sins and budgetary shortfalls, but that doesn’t really apply here - again because of wise choices. The brothers were given free and complete access to their friend’s company (it really is named Splashdown) for the two years of production, so there’s enough action at big events to place Kenny and his team in a reality we recognise. The pacing also is fantastic; each scene adds colour to what eventually builds, under the sewage gags, into a complex sketch of an inherently hilarious and very loveable character. A triumph both as comedy and character study, Kenny is charming, disarming and funny as hell; the perfect antidote to any disappointing summer blockbuster.” - William Thomas, Empire

A routine traffic stop by Cochrane Mounties has led to child pornography and voyeurism charges against a Priddis man.

On May 13, an RCMP officer who'd stopped a vehicle noticed evidence that led to an investigation by the Southern Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation team, said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus.

The ICE unit then executed four search warrants that extended to Cochrane, a residence in Priddis and business in Calgary.

A 31-year-old suspect has been charged with manufacturing, possessing and accessing child pornography as well as voyeurism, said Andrus.

Under a publication ban designed to protect the victim, the accused can't be named....

Director: Helen Hunt
Country: US
Released: 2008
Starring: Helen Hunt, Colin Firth, Bette Midler, Mathew Broderick

“Then She Found Me, is a funny and touching story about the way we create families both by blood and by choice. April Epner is 39 and her biological clock is sounding an alarm. When she gets dumped by her charming but adolescent husband as a marital mistake, one door closes, but another one bursts open. Enter Bette Midler, as a brash, overwhelming talk show host named Bernice, who drops in out of the blue to declare herself April’s biological mother. The jaw-dropping cherry on top of the Sunday sundae: April is the result of a one-night stand Bernice had 40 years ago with Steve McQueen. Both devastated and baffled, April finds an escape from her screwed-up life in the arms of Frank, a handsome, warm, understanding and conveniently single father whose wife deserted him and their children. Mothering a ready-made family and tackling a new relationship at the same time presents double jeopardy, but the emotional minefields really explode when April discovers she is pregnant herself!... The Hunt-Firth team has a glowing chemistry; the human strain in his eyes and on his brow is unsentimental but on the verge of tears. Midler has her moments, too... She’s a fine catalyst as the larger-than-life hurricane who forces April to question the neat, dull, cookie-cutter existence she’s ordered for herself... As a director, Helen Hunt handles the reins sweetly, but with control and finesse. Actors directing themselves: Not always a good idea, but this time you go away impressed.” - Rex Reed, The New York Observer

Hey guys and girls,

It has been brought to my attention that a lot of people have been disappointed with us closing early on Monday June 3oth, as well as being closed Canada day.

I did get the numbers back from Friday - Monday, and they were almost triple what we everyone was expecting.

Besides Monday night, Sunday we were overwhelmed, as the sales that night were almost the same as Monday night. We had triple products ordered from Saputo last Thursday, and on Monday we cleaned Cash and Carry out of all the flour and cheese they had, and we still ran out.

I really do apologize for Monday night on behalf of the company, and I told the owner that it should not happen again, especially to our regular customers. I have suggested doing a customer appreciation night, and am waiting on approval to that.

If there were 14,000 people at the concert on Monday night, we fed a little over 5% of that mass of people.

Again, I do apologize for everything, but the owner is new to the business, and he like everyone else will make mistakes, and that's where I come in to make sure it doesn't happen again (one time is enough)

Hope everyone had a Happy Canada Day, and we'll see you at PEI Pizza.

This isn't entirely accurate as there is some jumping around in the track-log around my house and my office (when I'm just turning it on and inside). It's close enough though.

With the release of Firefox 3 last month, the Mozilla project, corporation, community, and the open-source software world in general have a great achievement on their collective hands.

My involvement with Mozilla began with a weblog post in October of 2003, over a year before the initial release of Firefox. During the year that led up to the release of Firefox 1.0, we assembled a team that created the branding and visual identity for Firefox (and later, Thunderbird).

As the launch of Firefox 1.0 approached, our involvement in the project grew from visual identity to include a redesign of the Mozilla.org in the summer of 2004 by our company, silverorange. This also meant a change in the nature of our involvement to include professional services. We were now making some money!

Though my involvement in Firefox was a only thin layer on top of the years of engineering, design, and development that truly built the product and organization, I’ve occasionally had some unique opportunities. On November 9th, 2004 at 4:51AM Atlantic time, I had the privilege of making the CVS-commit to the mozilla.org website that officially released Firefox 1.0.

With the release of Firefox 1.5 in November of 2005, we launched a the new Mozilla.com website (having separated the Firefox and Thunderbird products out from the larger Mozilla.org website). The release of Firefox 2, brought with it the first redesign of Mozilla.com where the visual style was provided by another design firm (NoBox) and our role was one of implementation.

With the release of Firefox 3, Mozilla.com received a major design, again with the visual style coming from another firm (The Royal Order of Experience Design from Chicago). The style of this new site is unlike anything we could have created ourselves and it made the implementation both challenging and fun.

The involvement that I and my co-workers had with Firefox and Mozilla has paralleled and contributed to the growth and success of our business. Our work with Firefox and Mozilla changed the world in which our company operated and provided a new set of extraordinary opportunities. When a guy named Kevin Rose called and asked us to help with the design of his new site, Digg, the first thing he said was that he had seen our work with Mozilla.

As the organization behind Firefox grew, and the scale and amounts of money floating around grew, I was skeptical of the long-term prospects of the project and of the product. Once Mozilla was big enough, I thought, they’d have the same problems any large software company has.

Firefox 3 has proven me wrong. I really expected Firefox to get bigger, dumber, slower, as the small founding team of developers was eclipsed by a larger team. Instead Mozilla has shown that they are not “any large software company”. Like Linux, Apache, and other great free-software projects before them, they have shown how an open-source project can defy the traditional rules of software project management. The product has gotten smaller, smarter, and faster. The organization continues to look at issues that matter for an open web.

It’s been fun. So, when does Firefox 4 come out?

STACEY MURRAY
The Guardian

For Ann Matheson, the severe arthritis in both knees makes walking a very difficult part of her day.

“Every step I take every day hurts,” she said.
[Click for image]Ann Matheson, UPEI employee with mobility disability to lose designated parking

As an executive assistant in Main Building at the University of Prince Edward Island, getting to work has never been much trouble because of three designated parking spaces located outside the building.

But that’s about to change, as the university plans to remove the spaces in the coming weeks to help reduce internal traffic on the campus. Three staff members use the parking on a regular basis, as well as several students.

Matheson first learned of the issue in May when the university came to her about the changes. They then held public meetings concerning the issue.

Following the meeting, the decision was upheld and alternate parking arrangements were found for those involved, she said.

“They’re willing to compromise and give us a couple spaces in visitor parking.”

The solution is the opposite of what should be happening to designated parking outside the building, she said.

“They need a couple more spaces, not to take what is there.”

Marcia Carroll, executive director of the P.E.I. Council of People with Disabilities, said the organization had received complaints from those working in the building and has spoken with the university about the issue.

“We spoke very candidly about the importance of designated parking.”

Jackie MacPhail, a representative with facilities management at the university, said there have been a couple of complaints from staff, each of which has been brought to the university’s accessibility council.

She said the decision was made in accordance with several goals the university had in mind, which included making the campus more pedestrian-friendly by eliminating internal traffic. Part of that plan includes removing parking spaces within the campus.

MacPhail said they addressed the accessibility issue by providing alternate parking for those affected.

“We did do a new barrier-free parking lot off Steele (Building).”
She said the existing parking outside Main Building wasn’t available to students so the new parking will ensure all those who need designated spaces are treated equally.

Matheson said some of her students use the spaces as well so fairness shouldn’t be an issue.

On the campus, only two other buildings are located a distance from designated parking spaces but they have never had such spaces, Matheson said. This is something that Main Building has always had.

“I don’t understand if it’s there, why would it be taken away,” she said.

“To take it away is going to hinder Main (Building).”

For her, going to work is going to become much more difficult, she said, as the alternate parking is a good distance from the building.

“On Monday morning I would probably be fine. Tuesday would be more painful.”

The designated spaces were set to be removed at the end of May but construction has yet to begin.

“We’re on borrowed time,” she said.

Happy Fourth of July to our American Readers! I am doing a bit of research that points to our fair town being something of the refuge of the first terrorists of your fair land. Bands of Tory and Mohawk Loyalists in the 1780s left here, for example, to destroy all before them led by John Johnson, step-son of Molly Brant. Somewhere I read that of the 100 flour mills between Albany and Syracuse NY only one was left in operation that fall. These efforts kept the US army out of northern NY through lack of supplies and, hence, made a buffer that kept our small Loyalist fringe alive. In many ways, Kingston is Ontario's Plymouth Rock but also factually related to New York. We should celebrate our own Ontarian (and therefore western Canadian) survival on this day as much as our southern pals do.

  • Speaking of our near neighbours, I came across this website of abandoned buildings of northern New York. Note LaFarge mansion to the lower left.
  • Two archeology blogs.
  • I have negotiated a 8000 character limit for blog comments. Please use these wisely as there us a character limit globally being studied by the UN.
  • I think it is time to agree with Harper's point made yesterday - the founding of Quebec is a founding moment in Canadian history. We suffer from divisions that really are only in the mind. The idea now that there are two solitudes should be strange to us all - we have that egality now that was missing. Canada needs to understand itself to be French and English as well as First Nation, Scot and those who came after as well - not as 1970s multiculturalism but just as neighbours together. We need to find our own haka, remember and play baseball, cricket and rugby as well as lacrosse and snowshowing. And be thankful for Halifax, Quebec and Kingston, the three citadels that protected one young nation.
  • Darcey notes the passing of Bozo.
  • Wine is being grown by Lake Huron. What's so wrong with global warming?
  • Gee, I sure hope the rude stuff I looked at on YouTube when it started up doesn't come out in court documents.

I can’t believe any Government would sign this type of exclusitivity. Whoever is responsible for signing such an exclusive deal should be charge for squandering the right to free enterprise. Who in their right mind would have signed such a deal to take away other processors rights to make a living. I’m sure they have some strange way of justifying their decisions but I’m all for opening up our industries and businesses to compete against one another and that is what Ocean Choice should have to do. Kudos to Mr. Wall and any other processor for going forward.
Illegal lobster processing charges laid
Thursday, July 3, 2008
CBC News
The owner of the Howard's Cove fish plant in western P.E.I. has been charged with illegally processing lobster.
The province said it had inspectors in the plant on several occasions over the last six weeks and observed lobsters being processed, and the plant does not have a licence for that.
Howard's Cove is a former Polar Foods plant that once did process lobster. Polar went bankrupt in 2004 and was purchased by the province.
Polar was sold to the N.L. company Ocean Choice, and part of the agreement was if any new lobster processing licences were issued, the province would have to forgive a $14-million loan.
Ocean Choice kept two of the Polar plants operating, but not Howard's Cove, which was eventually taken over by Roger Wall.
Wall will enter a plea to the charges on July 16. Several lobster fishermen have indicated support for Wall, claiming there isn't enough competition for lobster, and that's one the reasons prices were so low this spring.

I wonder if that exclusive Club (retail gas dealers association) went back to providing the customers with some services like pumping the gas for their customers they could manage their own problems. They don't want to let the competition in and they don't want to provide any service and now they want us to pay up front. All they have to do is go to IRAC and they could probably get an order for us to deposit the money to their account first? I always buy my gas at one of Shell Stations in the City as they still pump my gas and they're friendly too. Yes you may pay a few pennies more but you are supporting employment here.
Force payment up front, say gas retailers
Thursday, July 3, 2008
CBC News
With incidents of gasoline theft increasing, some retailers on P.E.I. are calling for legislation to force consumers to pay for fuel before they start pumping.
Jeff Doucette, manager of Mel's Quickmart on St. Peter's Road, told CBC News on Wednesday he has a gas-and-dash incident about once every two weeks — significantly from last year. He believes provincial legislation requiring payment upfront is the only way to stop the problem.
"I think it will come to that," said Doucette.
"There seems to be no relief in the price of gas, so something is going to have to be done."
Every theft takes a big chunk out of Doucette's profits. Retailers make only about four cents a litre profit on gas, regardless of price. At current prices, that means having to sell 33 tanks full to make up for one run-off.
Dave Mader, executive director of the P.E.I. Retail Gasoline Dealers Association, also believes new measures are needed to stop gasoline theft.
"With the price of gas being what it is today, and what some say it's going to be in the months and years from now, we certainly can expect that we're going to see more and more drive-offs unless we can take some kind of measures to control it," said Mader.
At the same time, Mader believes it may not yet be time for government to step in. He would like to see retailers take other measures first, such as installing more video cameras and having attendants be more visible.
British Columbia recently became the first province to force people to pay before they pump, and New Brunswick is reviewing its legislation.

This summer silverorange is conducting an experiment with the normal working week. We're making it shorter.

For the past eighteen months we've been working too many hours per week. Last summer was a write-off as we had a few major projects being worked on. That work spilled into the fall and of course it kept cascading into the winter. We finally dug ourselves out from under our crippling workload this spring. We made a promise to ourselves to make this summer better than last.

For July and August of 2008 silverorange will be offline on Fridays.

Our hope is that this refreshing change of pace will make the remaining four work days much more effective. Our first Friday of rest is tomorrow.

We'll see how it goes.
